THE POSSESSIONS - OCEAN BLUE

REPRINTED FROM

ROCK NYC, LIVE & RECORDED

JUNE, 2010

The Possessions are a Brooklyn based soul and blues rock band, with a clutch of real gone albums and a reputation as a real good live band.

This song sounds like Cathy Richardson redux, like a blues base but white and soulful and yet again  also poppy: like Natalie Merchant fronting Average White Band but with harder guitars.

It is off their 2008 album Carousel and it is a keeper. From what I’ve heard of the current album, Oceans Blue,  Blue appears to be the operative color, but “I’ll Be Gone” holds up as a rock and soul triumph with a gorgeous guitar solo as it rides an addictive riff to the finish line. Sure, it is all about the lead singer Tracy Eisenberg,  BUT this band is a tight little sucker.

I compared Tracy’s singing to Merchant… yeah, but not quite… maybe a Stevie Nicks, just gorgeous but not the deep blues belter…

Apparently they are playing Shrine, July 22nd.

I am two songs into Carousel (can’t find the newbie on itunes though you can stream bits on their website) and I am very impressed. Definitely worth a coupla bucks to get into them.
